Triactin contains cyproheptadine, a first-generation antihistamine with antiserotonin activity. Its primary role is to treat selected allergy symptoms, but it can increase appetite and may lead to weight gain in some people, which is why it is sometimes misused for “fattening.”
Cyproheptadine reduces histamine-mediated symptoms such as itching, sneezing, and runny nose. Its central nervous system effects can cause sedation and appetite stimulation. Tablets commonly contain 4 mg, and syrup formulations are also available in some markets.
If appetite increases, calorie intake may rise and weight may increase. There is no guaranteed amount or timeline. Long-term use of a sedating antihistamine simply to gain weight is not a substitute for identifying the cause of underweight or poor appetite.
Drowsiness, dizziness, dry mouth, and impaired coordination are common. Blurred vision, constipation, or urinary difficulty may occur. Alcohol and other sedatives can intensify drowsiness. Caution is required with angle-closure glaucoma, urinary retention, symptomatic prostate enlargement, gastrointestinal obstruction, and MAO inhibitors.
There is no fixed timeline or guaranteed result; any gain is mainly related to increased appetite and calorie intake.
Hair loss is not a typical commonly listed cyproheptadine side effect; other causes should be considered if it occurs.
Follow the prescribed regimen. The major practical issue is sedation rather than a universal food-timing rule.
Long-term unsupervised use can prolong sedation and anticholinergic effects and is not recommended simply for weight gain.
It does not selectively enlarge body areas. There is no reliable medical evidence that cyproheptadine enlarges breasts.
