Medical Description

Antianginal agent belongs to beta-blockers used in the treatment of angina pectoris, heart failure with reduced ejection fraction, chronic hypertension, supraventricular tachycardia and in prophylaxis against migraine.

This Medicine is indicated for Hypertension.

Dosage & Administration

Hypertension / Angina: 50–100 mg once daily Heart failure: Start with 12.5–25 mg once daily, titrate gradually to target dose Post-MI / Arrhythmias: Usually 50–100 mg once daily Tablets must be swallowed whole or divided, not crushed or chewed Take once daily, preferably at the same time each day

Side Effects

Some of the following side effects may occur: Cough. Diarrhea or constipation. Dizziness or lightheadedness. Erection problems. Feeling nervous. Feeling tired, weak, drowsy, or a lack of energy. Headache. Nausea or vomiting.

Contraindications Hypersensitivity to metoprolol or beta-blockers Severe bradycardia Second or third-degree AV block Cardiogenic shock Decompensated heart failure Severe peripheral arterial disease Precautions Do not stop abruptly (risk of rebound angina/MI) Use caution in diabetes (masks hypoglycemia) Use cautiously in asthma/COPD Monitor heart rate and blood pressure Dose adjustment may be needed in hepatic impairment

Drug Interactions

Calcium channel blockers (verapamil, diltiazem) → ↑ risk of bradycardia/heart block Digoxin → additive bradycardia Antiarrhythmics (amiodarone) → conduction disturbances Insulin/oral antidiabetics → masked hypoglycemia NSAIDs → may reduce antihypertensive effect

Pregnancy & Lactation

Pregnancy: Use only if clearly needed; may cause fetal bradycardia or growth restriction Lactation: Excreted in breast milk; generally considered compatible but monitor infant for bradycardia
