Medical Description
Omacor contains highly purified omega-3 fatty acid ethyl esters, mainly EPA and DHA . It is a lipid-lowering medicine used alongside dietary measures to help reduce elevated triglyceride levels when diet alone does not provide sufficient control.
Indication & Usage
Indicated as an adjunct to diet for the treatment of certain forms of endogenous hypertriglyceridaemia when dietary measures alone are insufficient. It may be used alone in type IV hypertriglyceridaemia or together with a statin in type IIb/III when triglyceride control remains inadequate.
Active Ingredients
Omega 3 (DHA,EPA)
Dosage & Administration
The usual starting dose for high triglyceride levels is 2 capsules daily. Capsules should be swallowed with water and are preferably taken with meals to reduce gastrointestinal side effects.
Side Effects
Common side effects mainly involve the digestive system and may include abdominal discomfort or bloating, abdominal pain, constipation, diarrhea, indigestion, gas, belching, acid reflux, nausea, or vomiting. Uncommon effects may include headache, dizziness, taste disturbances, low blood pressure, nosebleeds, increased blood glucose, gout, gastrointestinal bleeding, or skin rash. Rare reactions include allergy, urticaria, and changes in liver enzyme levels.
Safety Advice
Do not use Omacor if you are allergic to omega-3-acid ethyl esters, soya, peanuts, or any of its ingredients. Use with caution if you have a fish allergy, liver or kidney problems, uncontrolled diabetes, an increased risk of bleeding, or if you have recently experienced trauma or are due to undergo surgery. Patients taking anticoagulants may require closer monitoring. Use in children is not recommended because adequate safety and efficacy data are unavailable, and clinical experience in patients over 70 years of age is limited.
Storage
Store Omacor at a temperature not exceeding 25°C. Do not freeze. Keep the medicine out of the sight and reach of children and do not use it after the expiry date stated on the packaging.
Drug Interactions
Omacor may increase bleeding time, particularly at higher doses. Patients taking oral anticoagulants such as warfarin should be monitored, and prothrombin time/INR may need to be checked when Omacor is started or discontinued. The dose of the anticoagulant may need adjustment when appropriate.
Pregnancy & Lactation
There are insufficient data regarding the use of Omacor during pregnancy; therefore, it should not be used during pregnancy unless clearly necessary and recommended by a doctor. There are also insufficient data regarding its excretion into breast milk, and the official product information recommends that Omacor should not be used during breastfeeding.
