Medical Description
Used for Epilepsy, Postherpetic Neuralgia treatment.
Indication & Usage
Neuropathic pain (e.g. diabetic neuropathy, postherpetic neuralgia)
Adjunctive therapy in partial seizures with or without secondary generalization
Central and peripheral neuropathic pain syndromes

Dosage & Administration
Neuropathic pain / seizures (adults):
Initial dose: 300 mg orally on day one, 300 mg orally 2 times day on day two, then 300 mg orally 3 times a day on day three
Maintenance dose: 300 to 600 mg orally 3 times a day
Dose adjustment required in renal impairment
Swallow tablets whole; may be taken with or without food
Do not discontinue abruptly
Side Effects
Common:
Dizziness
Somnolence
Fatigue
Ataxia
Peripheral edema
Less common / serious:
Mood changes, depression
Suicidal ideation (rare; class warning)
Weight gain
Visual disturbances

Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to gabapentin
Precautions
Use caution in elderly (↑ risk of dizziness/falls)
Monitor for mood or behavioral changes
Adjust dose in renal impairment
Avoid alcohol and CNS depressants
Taper gradually when discontinuing

Store below 25–30°C
Protect from moisture
Drug Interactions
CNS depressants (opioids, benzodiazepines, alcohol) → increased sedation/respiratory depression
Antacids (Al/Mg) → reduce gabapentin absorption; separate by ≥2 hours
Morphine → may increase gabapentin levels
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy: Use only if benefit outweighs risk; associated with potential fetal risk
Lactation: Excreted into breast milk; use with caution and monitor infant
